Immediately after birth, the newborn’s umbilical cord is clamped and cut in the delivery room. The umbilical stump is whitish at first, gradually dries out, darkens and finally falls off within 7–10 days.

Until the cord falls off, the stump needs regular care and disinfection to prevent skin and systemic infections. Cleaning with pure alcohol and Betadine antiseptic solution is recommended. This is repeated until the cord falls off and for 2–3 days afterwards, until the area has fully healed. Until it detaches, the umbilical stump should be kept dry and not covered by the nappy. A few small drops of blood are normal when it detaches and falls off.

Any discharge, unusual odour or redness around the navel should be assessed by a pediatrician, as it may indicate omphalitis (infection of the umbilical stump).
