People of any age can be affected, but it is most common in children. It is caused by certain strains of group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus that produce an erythrogenic toxin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After an incubation period of 3\u20135 days, a sore throat with high fever appears suddenly. The throat is bright red with small pinpoint haemorrhagic spots on the palate and pharynx. The tonsils swell and are covered with a white coating. The tongue is white at first and then turns red like a berry (&#8220;strawberry tongue&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within 24\u201348 hours the typical rash appears, starting on the neck and spreading to the trunk and limbs. It is red, finely spotted and fades when pressed. The skin around the mouth is pale and the cheeks flushed. The <strong>diagnosis<\/strong> is based on the characteristic clinical picture, a rapid strep test or a throat culture.
