It is a self-limiting viral infection that resolves on its own and leaves lifelong immunity. It is caused by human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After an incubation period of 1 to 2 weeks, the child suddenly develops a high fever (40\u00b0C \u2013 41\u00b0C). The fever is usually accompanied by other findings such as a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes at the back of the neck, irritability and ear infection. Despite the high fever, the child is usually in good general condition. On the third or fourth day the fever drops abruptly and a rash appears, first on the trunk and then spreading to the face and limbs. The rash is not particularly itchy and fades within one or two days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The diagnosis is clinical, based on the characteristic signs of the illness. Blood tests may show a low white cell count with a relative increase in lymphocytes. Febrile seizures are the most common complication. There is no specific treatment; fever-reducing medication and adequate hydration are recommended.
